Police have arrested two men after 310.71 kilograms of cannabis were discovered in a minibus during a patrol exercise near the Old Bamia Police Checkpoint in Linden on Monday, October 20, 2025, at around 20:41 hrs.

According to the Guyana Police Force, a mobile patrol team from Regional Division 10 was conducting random stop-and-search operations when they intercepted a dark blue Toyota Hiace minibus bearing registration number BAJ 4486, owned by the Region 10 Tourism Committee Inc.
The vehicle was being driven by 39-year-old educator and political activist, Devin Sears of Mackenzie, Linden, who was accompanied by 69-year-old farmer, Albert Sandy of Tacama Waterfront, Upper Berbice River.
Police said that upon being stopped, the driver appeared visibly nervous and was “sweating profusely.” When questioned, he claimed to be “transporting tourism plants.” Officers instructed him to pull over and conducted a search of the vehicle.
Inside, police discovered 22 bulky black plastic bags and 4 large brown canvas bags containing leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis. Both men were informed of the offence, arrested, and cautioned.
While Sears remained silent, Sandy reportedly admitted ownership of the narcotics, telling police that he had paid Sears to transport him to Parika.
The suspected cannabis was weighed in their presence at the Mackenzie Police Station and confirmed to total 310.71 kilograms.
Both suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
