Guyana to host CBC Women’s Basketball Championship in November

The Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF) has announced that Guyana will host the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Women’s Championship from November 9 to 17 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in Georgetown.

This championship marks a significant milestone for regional basketball as it returns for the first time since 2018, when Suriname last held the tournament.

This year, ten of the Caribbean’s leading basketball nations are expected to compete for prestigious spots at the Women’s CentroBasket Tournament, which serves as a crucial qualifier for the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup.

Michael Singh, President of the GBF, expressed that this announcement showcases both the country’s readiness and the trust that FIBA has placed in the federation’s leadership.

“Guyana is prepared to host this championship, especially considering it’s the return of this major tournament after seven years,” Singh stated.

He also expressed gratitude to FIBA for accepting Guyana’s bid, highlighting that it demonstrates their recognition of the GBF’s efforts and the nation’s capability to organize international sporting events.

Singh mentioned that the GBF will promptly enter operational mode, collaborating with the Government of Guyana, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, and the National Sports Commission (NSC) to facilitate the smooth execution of the championship.

Preparations for the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall will be prioritized to ensure it meets international standards.
A Local Organising Committee (LOC) will soon be formed to oversee the tournament’s logistics.

The CBC Women’s Championship is particularly meaningful for Guyana, which has a rich history in regional basketball. In 1996, the Guyanese women’s national team secured the country’s first Caribbean title at the CARICOM Basketball Championship in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

Under the guidance of Head Coach Linden “Sancho” Alphonso and featuring standout player Karen Abrams who has since embarked on a successful tech career; the team triumphed over Jamaica with a score of 67–55 in a memorable final at the Jean Pierre Sports Complex.
