Businessman Accused in Fatal Hit-and-Run Granted $100,000 Bail

A 33-year-old businessman who was charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that claimed the life of 16-year-old Kimberley Jones has been released on $100,000 bail.
Paul Mahabal, of Montrose, East Coast Demerara, appeared before the Weldaad Magistrates’ Court on Friday, where he faced two charges: failing to stop after an accident and failing to render assistance. He pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Initially remanded to prison, Mahabal was later granted bail in the sum of $100,000. He is expected to return to court as the matter progresses.
The charges stem from a deadly collision that occurred around 21:20 hrs on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, along the Bel Air Public Road, West Coast Berbice.
Police reported that Jones, of Lot 63, Number 22 Village, Bel Air, was attempting to cross the road from north to south when she was struck by a motorcar bearing registration number PAF 2130.
The vehicle, allegedly driven by Mahabal, was proceeding west on the southern side of the roadway when it struck the teen.
Instead of stopping, Mahabal reportedly fled the scene, leaving the injured girl behind.
Eyewitnesses and concerned residents rushed to Jones’s aid and transported her to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Following a swift investigation, police ranks from the Mahaicony Police Station intercepted the vehicle and arrested Mahabal. The car has since been impounded.
Authorities have disclosed that additional charges, including causing death by dangerous driving, are expected to be filed against Mahabal once legal advice is received from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
