Over 2,000 Guyanese are graduating this year through the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL), under the theme “Enhancing the Nation’s Human Capacity”.

The massive two-day (June 9-10) graduation ceremony is being held at the National Cultural Center in Georgetown.

Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh, in his remarks satated that this event is the third of its kind, highlighting that since the launch of the GOAL initiative in 2021, the government has invested $12.9 billion into the programme, awarding more than 39,000 scholarships to citizens across the country.

He added that the figure represents an average investment of $312,000 per student, noting that this year alone, 2000 persons have completed courses at several levels, noting that the initiative is key to developing a highly skilled and educated workforce.

For the first time, the GOAL graduation ceremony is being held over two days. Monday’s session saw 580 graduates receiving master’s degrees from a range of international universities.

Tuesday’s ceremony will continue with the conferral of bachelor’s degrees, postgraduate diplomas, and professional certificates.

This year’s graduation coincides with the fifth anniversary of GOAL.

The programme was designed to expand access to higher education by offering fully-funded online and hybrid learning opportunities.

Students graduating with master’s degrees on Monday completed studies with internationally recognised institutions, including:

Indira Gandhi National Open University (India)

International University of Applied Sciences (Germany)

JAIN (Deemed-to-be University) (India)

Liverpool John Moores University (United Kingdom)

Structuralia, Universidad Isabel I (Spain)

Texila American University (Guyana)

Unicaf University (Malawi and Zambia)

University of East London (United Kingdom)
