AGRI Min Unveils Major Agricultural and Livelihood Projects for Corentyne

Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha met with residents of #77 Village, Kilcoy/Hampshire, and Ankerville, Port Mourant, during a series of community outreach sessions held along the Corentyne Coast.

The meetings, part of the government’s broader commitment to grassroots engagement and rural empowerment, attracted strong participation from farmers, residents, and other stakeholders.

During the gatherings, Minister Mustapha outlined a number of significant initiatives aimed at improving drainage, livestock farming, and income-generating opportunities in the region.

The announcements are part of the administration’s ongoing efforts to bolster sustainable agricultural development and uplift rural communities.

Among the key developments announced was the procurement of 40 mobile drainage pumps by the Ministry of Agriculture through the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA).

“One of these pumps will be deployed right here in Kilcoy/Hampshire to strengthen your drainage infrastructure and provide timely relief during periods of heavy rainfall,” Minister Mustapha said. The deployment of the pump is expected to reduce flooding and boost farm productivity across the area.

Responding to concerns raised by livestock farmers, the Minister revealed a collaborative initiative involving the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA) and the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo). The goal is to identify and develop pasture lands to support cattle rearing.

“I’ve instructed the GLDA to work along with GuySuCo to identify lands to develop a pasture for your cattle. We are working to develop the livestock industry for both beef and dairy, so we have to work with you to develop the facilities,” he told attendees.

As part of efforts to promote socio-economic inclusion, Minister Mustapha also announced the introduction of a Single Parents Poultry Project, aimed at creating sustainable income opportunities for women and vulnerable families within the communities.

While speaking at Port Mourant, the Minister also addressed drainage concerns specific to the area.

“A long boom excavator and two small excavators will be deployed to this area to clear the drains and sideline in this area. This programme will commence in one week and should be competed in one month,” he explained.

The series of community engagements underscore the government’s strategy of maintaining close contact with citizens while addressing issues that affect their livelihoods.
