Guyana Achieves Record Rice Production in 2024

January 2 2025-  Guyana has achieved a historic milestone in its agriculture sector, producing a record-breaking 725,282 metric tonnes of rice in 2024. This achievement surpasses the country’s target of 700,000 metric tonnes, marking a new chapter in the nation’s agricultural history.

Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha made the announcement during the ministry’s end-of-year press conference on Monday.

He highlighted that the remarkable production was bolstered by an average national yield of 6.6 tonnes per hectare, the highest ever recorded in Guyana.

Over the past four years, rice production in Guyana has seen steady incremental growth. This year’s exceptional performance is attributed to the introduction of high-yielding rice varieties developed by the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB), including GRDB-18, GRDB-17, and GRDB-16.

He posited that the success underscores the government’s commitment to innovation and development in the agriculture sector. By integrating improved crop varieties and modern farming techniques, Guyana continues to strengthen its position as a major rice producer in the region.

Minister Mustapha praised the efforts of local farmers and stakeholders who contributed to this record-breaking achievement, which not only boosts the agricultural economy but also solidifies Guyana’s reputation as a leader in sustainable rice production.
