December 9 2024 – The Ministry of Education has taken another significant step in enhancing early childhood education with the commissioning of the new Monkey Mountain Nursery School in Region Eight on December 6.

This state-of-the-art facility, designed to serve 49 children, provides a safe, modern, and engaging environment for young learners in the hinterland community. The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to equitable access to quality education for all Guyanese children, regardless of their location.

A Modern Learning Environment

According to a release from the ministry, the nursery school is equipped with bright and spacious classrooms, age-appropriate furniture, educational resources, and designated play areas. These features aim to foster creativity, curiosity, and a lifelong love for learning among its young students.

At the commissioning ceremony, Minister of Education Priya Manickchand emphasized the transformative role of early childhood education in shaping Guyana’s future. “Every child deserves an equal start,” she said, reaffirming the Ministry’s dedication to ensuring quality education reaches even the most remote areas.

Benefits to the Community

Parents and residents expressed gratitude for the new school, noting that it eliminates the need for young children to travel long distances for early education.

The availability of trained teachers, who are well-equipped to meet the developmental needs of young learners, has also been a cause for celebration in the community.

Additionally, Monkey Mountain teachers are benefiting from online training programs conducted directly within the village. This initiative allows educators to enhance their skills while remaining with their families and serving their community.

Future Investments in Education

The release further stated that the Ministry of Education’s efforts in Monkey Mountain extend beyond the nursery school. A secondary school is currently under construction in the village, representing a comprehensive investment in the region’s educational infrastructure. These developments aim to ensure students have access to continuous learning opportunities close to home.

A Broader Vision

The Monkey Mountain Nursery School forms part of the Ministry’s nationwide strategy to expand nursery education, particularly in underserved and remote communities. This initiative aligns with the government’s goal of achieving universal access to nursery education, reducing disparities, and improving educational outcomes for all.

Residents praised the initiative, emphasizing its potential to benefit the community for generations. The Monkey Mountain Nursery School is expected to serve as a model for future early childhood education projects in hinterland areas, showcasing the government’s commitment to fostering equal opportunities for every child in Guyana.
