October 16 2024 – In a video address to the World Food Forum, President Dr. Irfaan Ali urged global leaders to increase collaboration to tackle the pressing issue of hunger, emphasizing that failure to do so would be a grave indictment on humanity.

He highlighted the growing challenges faced by global food systems, citing climate change, ongoing conflicts, and deepening inequalities as key drivers of the crisis. President Ali also expressed deep concern for the millions of people in conflict zones who lack access to basic nourishment.

The World Food Forum is currently underway at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) headquarters in Rome, Italy, and online, from October 14 to 18.

The event brings together global experts, changemakers, and visionary leaders to unify efforts under the theme: “Good food for all, for today and tomorrow.” As a flagship annual event, the forum serves as a platform for cross-sectoral collaboration to transform the future of agrifood systems.

In his remarks, President Ali stressed the need for immediate action, stating, “This year’s World Food Forum is not just an opportunity to discuss challenges; it calls for action to ensure that every individual has access to safe, nutritious, and sustainable food now and in the future.”

Guyana has earned recognition as a global leader in food security and agrifood systems transformation. The country is at the forefront of the Caribbean’s “25 by 2025” initiative, which aims to reduce the region’s food importation bill by 25% by 2025.

President Ali reiterated Guyana’s commitment to fostering regional collaboration, innovation, and investment in sustainable food systems.
