October 7, 2024 – Police are investigating a robbery at a jewelry and pawnshop on Trinity Street and Main Road, New Amsterdam, which ended with one of the suspected robbers being fatally shot by the shop’s owner.

The dead bandit

A police report suggests, the suspect, who fled the scene after being shot, was later found dead with a gunshot wound to the chest.

The robbery occurred around 10:20 a.m. when two armed men, wearing hooded jackets, entered the pawnshop and robbed a customer, shooting him in the leg during the heist.

The shop owner, who holds a licensed firearm, responded swiftly to the disturbance, exchanging fire with the suspects.

The robbers fled the scene while discharging several rounds.

As they escaped, the suspects reportedly ran into the compound of New Amsterdam Primary School.

One of the robbers, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest, was found lying face-up on the ground.

A Taurus 9MM handgun, along with a magazine containing live rounds and some of the stolen items, was recovered from the deceased suspect’s pockets and nearby.

The second suspect remains at large, and investigations into the incident are ongoing. The customer who was shot during the robbery was taken to the hospital for treatment. Authorities are continuing to collect evidence as they work to bring the accomplice to justice.
