Guyanese Student Honored as Top Matriculant at UWI

The University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona Campus held its annual matriculation ceremony on Thursday, September 5, 2024, where Sheridan Ava Dyal, a remarkable student from Guyana, was honored as the top matriculant.
Dyal’s extraordinary academic journey, including an impressive total of 40 CXC/CAPE subjects, was the highlight of the event.
A recent graduate of Queen’s College in Guyana, Dyal’s academic credentials are nothing short of remarkable. She earned 19 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) passes—18 with grade ones and one with a grade two—and excelled in the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE), where she completed 21 subjects, achieving 10 grade ones and 11 grade twos.
In addition to being named CXC’s most outstanding student in the sciences in 2022, Dyal was also recognized as one of Guyana’s top CAPE performers. Her academic success culminated in the prestigious honor of signing the Matriculation Book on behalf of the incoming class, symbolizing her leadership and the high standards she represents for her peers.
The ceremony, was led by Campus Registrar Dr. Donovan Stanberry, who commended Dyal’s exceptional achievements.
Dr. Stanberry emphasized that Dyal’s accomplishments should serve as an inspiration for her peers.
Sheridan’s Mother, Sherry Ann Dyal told the BIG Smith News Watch, “As a parent it’s an honour to have such a brilliant daughter. It still doesn’t feel real and I just simply love when an ordinary child such as Sheridan can do extraordinary things . So now she has myself and my family full support to do Doctor of Dentistry then to specialize to become a Maxillofacial surgeon which is a unique field of which Guyana does not have many of those specialist.”
At just 19 years old, Dyal is embarking on a new academic chapter, pursuing a degree in Dentistry within UWI’s Faculty of Medicine.
