The Government of Guyana has officially signed a $161 million USD contract for the rehabilitation of the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.

The contract, awarded to a joint venture between Namalco Construction Services and GuyAmerica Construction Inc., marks the beginning of a significant infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity and promoting regional development.

The contract signing and sod-turning ceremony took place today at the Mighty Enchanter Creek, where key government officials and stakeholders gathered to launch the project.

Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar, highlighted the government’s focus on development projects that serve the public interest. The Soesdyke-Linden Highway project will see the rehabilitation of 73 kilometers of road, including the refurbishment of bridges and the construction of three roundabouts to ensure smoother traffic flow.

Public Works Minister Bishop Juan Edghill emphasized the national importance of the project, revealing that it is being funded by the Islamic Development Bank.

The project aims to enhance traffic flow and safety across Soesdyke, Linden, Timehri, and surrounding areas.

Key features of the project include the installation of 2,900 streetlights along the highway, pedestrian bridges adjacent to the new vehicle bridges, and additional lay-bys for trucks.

The project also addresses significant drainage issues, road breakaways, and washouts, with high-quality reflective markings and other safety mechanisms being implemented.

Furthermore, the Highway will be designed to accommodate increased tonnage, crucial for the transportation needs of the region. The areas of Good Success and Timehri are also set to benefit from these improvements.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Works, Vladim Persaud, noted that the construction would support small business owners and provide training opportunities for local residents.

President Dr. Irfaan Ali, in his remarks, described the investment as part of a broader strategy for Guyana’s transformation.

He highlighted the highway’s role as a vital link between Regions 4 and 10, serving as the main artery for hinterland development.

The President assured that the new highway would connect to key infrastructure points, expanding Guyana’s development and productive capacity.

President Ali further stated that the project is expected to open new areas for investment, particularly in transforming Linden into an industrial hub supporting the mining community. It will also link to other crucial roads that are vital for agriculture and housing, including connections to areas such as Bartica and Parika.

This comprehensive plan aims to integrate different regions, thereby fostering economic growth and expanding opportunities across the country.

He posited that the event underscores the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure that directly benefits the people of Guyana.

Recruitment for the project began on-site, offering employment to those in the community.
