Guyana commissions ‘Heroes’ Highway” after Bell 412 crash victims

Less than five days after being killed in a helicopter crash, Guyana has commissioned a newly built road, (Heroes Highway) in honour of Colonel Michael Shahoud, Retired Brigadier Gary Beaton, Lt.Colonel Michael Charles, Lt. Colonel Sean Welcome and Staff Sergeant Jason Khan, five Guyana Defence Force Service men.

Guyana commissions ‘Heroes’ Highway” after Bell 412 crash victims

The construction of the road was ongoing for a while and had been schedule for a Sunday December 10, 2023 commissioning but under another name.

In light of the tragedy which has thrown the nation in a deep state of shock and mourning, the Guyana Government decided to honour the men by commissioning the highway in their honour.

President of Guyana Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali on Sunday evening commissioned the road in the presence of hundreds of Guyana Defence and Police Forces Officers as well as personnel from the Prisons and Fire Services.

The families and relatives of the soldiers were also present at the commissioning as the VIPs’ and guests of honour.

President Irfaan Ali in his tears flowing commissioning speech, said the names of the dead soldiers will be placed at the highways and the names of every other service members who does henceforth in the line of duty.

The construction of the highway is one that falls under the preview of the Ministry of Housing and Water as part of their infrastructural development and linking communities.
