Judge sentences bodybuilder to two years in jail for assaulting woman

Warren George, 22, who was earlier found not guilty of raping a woman, was on Wednesday, jailed for two years for assaulting the said woman.

The custodial sentence was imposed by Demerara High Court Judge, Navindra Singh.

On May 24, George was acquitted of raping the woman after a mixed 12-member jury returned a unanimous not-guilty verdict in his favour.

He was, however, found guilty of assaulting her so as to cause her actual bodily harm on June 12, 2020. As such, he was remanded to prison pending his sentencing hearing.

On May 16, the day his trial commenced, George escaped from the High Court in Georgetown by jumping over the courthouse’s western corridor.

He then ran out of the court’s compound, heading in the direction of Avenue of the Republic.

When he showed up at court the following day, he apologised to Justice Singh for his actions.

But after considering the serious nature of the offences he faced, the Judge revoked George’s bail and remanded him to prison pending the hearing and determination of his trial.

This case was prosecuted by Senior State Counsel Tiffini Lyken and State Counsel Nafeeza Baig.

George was represented by Attorney-at-Law Ramlochan.

George, who is a former prison officer, is a bodybuilder.
