Impromptu police search at Dolphin Secondary; Marijuana removed

As the Guyana Police Force and the Ministry of Education rekindle their police/school relationship across the country it is expected that the security in and around the teaching and learning environment will improve.

Today police ranks from the Ruimveldt Police Station removed a quantity of narcotics from within the confines of the Dolphin Secondary School located in Georgetown.

At approximately 10:00 Am the police visited the school and carried out a search on students and their personal belongings.

Nothing unlawful was found on students personally nor in their belongings. However, searches that were conducted in the school environment and the washroom unearthed a quantity of leaves, seeds, and stems of cannabis. Those items along with several Ziploc plastic bags were found in a purse inside the females’ washroom.

The total amount of narcotics recovered during that raid amounted to 22 grams. The item has since been placed into an evidence bag and lodged with the Narcotics Branch of the force’s Criminal Investigation Department.

Following a street brawl between students of the Campbellville Secondary School and what appeared to be an out-of-school gang on Thursday, the Ministry of Education met with the Ministry of Home Affairs and Guyana Police Force to discuss the issue.

It was agreed that the Education Ministry and the Police Force will work closely to have students and teachers engaged. In the past, the school would usually allot a time and day for the police to meet with and have the pep and motivational talks with students as a crime mitigation factor.
