Quindon Bacchus murder: 5 prosecution witnesses testify so far, 10 more remaining.

The Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the murder of Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara (ECD) youth Quindon Bacchus is ongoing at the Cove and John Magistrate’s Court and the prosecution has called five witnesses to testify so far, with about 10 more remaining.

Police Lance Corporal Kristoff De Nobrega is currently on remand for the capital offence of murder over Bacchus’ death.

It is alleged that he murdered the father of one on June 10, 2022, at Haslington, ECD. He has not been required to plead to the indictable charge.

The PI continues on July 25 before Magistrate Fabayo Azore. De Nobrega’s lawyer is Bernard DaSilva.

His colleagues, Lance Corporal Thurston Simon and Sergeant Dameion McLennon have been each charged with obstructing the course of justice concerning the young man’s death.

Their matter is continuing at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

According to the prosecutor, there was no evidence to support the pair’s story of Bacchus opening fire on them during a sting operation on June 10, 2022.

The two cops charged with obstructing the course of justice are accused of giving Police investigators false statements in relation to what transpired on the day in question.

Police had said that Bacchus, 23, was fatally shot while in the process of selling an illegal gun to Lance Corporal De Nobrega, who was at the time undercover and had gone to transact business with him.

The Police had noted that Bacchus shot at the plain clothes Policeman who returned fire. But shortly after the killing, a video surfaced, showing that it was the Police rank who shot at Bacchus.

Persons have since come forward, claiming that Bacchus and De Nobrega were known to each other and that misunderstanding between them over a woman led to the killing.

The shooting death of Bacchus has been condemned by a wide cross-section of society and resulted in protest actions along the ECD corridor.

The most recent protest turned violent, with persons beating and robbing vendors at the Mon Repos Market, looting their stalls, blocking the roadway and burning vehicles, tires and piles of wood.
