Human remains found after firefighter gave 'all clear' of fire scene

By Michael Richmond

The charred remains of a human suspected to be that of 45-year-old Kevin Trotman of Lot 101 Third Street Agricola, East Bank Demerara, were removed from among the rubble of a fire scene that destroyed two properties on Sunday and which was given the all-clear by the Guyana Fire Service, Sunday after they wrapped up their fire-fighting exercise.

On Sunday two properties located at lots 101 and 102 were destroyed by Fire on Sunday when a five-year-old was playing with a cigarette lighter, according to what residents told this publication when we visited the community of Agricola on Monday where approximately 12 persons were left homeless.

The human remains were found just after 09:00hrs Monday. The fire started somewhere around 15:00hrs on Sunday afternoon and saw the response by three fire tenders, stated residents of Agricola.

During the firefighting exercise on Sunday, fire and rescue personnel were told that the upper flat occupant, Kevin Trotman, was not at home as the fire blazed as he usually leaves his house early in the morning and returns late in the afternoons.

It was however noted that the man is said to be a constant imbiber of alcohol and was seen earlier in the day imbibing. It is suspected that he might have gone home to sleep after imbibing and might have still been sleeping when the fire started.

Relatives of Trotman have confirmed that they have noted heard from him since yesterday’s fire and are sure that the remains recovered today are his.

Several persons within the community called for adults to desist leaving children at home alone or unattended and supervised as their playful nature could be deadly in instances.
