One week after he stabbed his common-law wife to death, 27-year-old Ricardo Kattow, called “Otis”, who had attempted to take his life after the gruesome act, was on Monday, remanded to prison for the capital offence of murder by Magistrate Fabayo Azore.

He was not required to plead to the indictable charge when he appeared at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court. Particulars of the charge stated that on Monday, March 6, in the East Demerara Magisterial District, he murder Aneeza Ishmael, 26.

Kattow, a fisherman, was remanded to prison for the killing which took place at their Hope Estate, East Coast Demerara (ECD) home. April 25 is the murder accused’s next court date.

Police Headquarters has reported that the murder occurred at around 10:00 hours.

Enquiries disclosed that the couple lived together and had ongoing domestic issues in which Kattow would accuse his partner of being unfaithful.

According to a statement from the Police, Ishmael left her home on Friday, March 3, and went to her friend’s house at Better Hope, ECD where she stayed for a few days.

However, at about 10:00 hrs on March 6, she returned home in the company of her sister, age 21, of Kersaint Park, ECD to collect her belongings. While there, she was confronted by Kattow, who asked her not to leave.

Ishmael insisted that she only came to collect her clothing.  As such, he became annoyed, pulled a knife from the waist of his pants, and attacked the woman. Ishmael’s sister pushed her away and told her to run, which she did.

Kattow ran behind his reputed wife and caught up with her in the yard, where he stabbed her in the neck, face, and hands, causing her to fall to the ground.

He then attacked her sister, and she fought him off; she received a wound to her left thumb.  He then inflicted several wounds on his body and consumed a poisonous substance, and he fell to the ground. Neighbours were alerted, and the Police were summoned.

On arrival at the scene, Police ranks examined Kattow and Ismael. They were escorted to the CC Nicholson Hospital at Nabaclis, ECD, where they were admitted.

At about 12:20 hrs, Ismael died while receiving treatment. Her partner was subsequently admitted as a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was guarded by the Police.

At the crime scene, Police detectives recovered a knife and an empty bottle that appeared to have contained the poisonous substance Kattow consumed.
