Following his second trial, 25-year-old Rayan Carter who was accused of the 2018 murder of Kaneville, East Bank Demerara (EBD) machine operator Ishwar Ramanah who was shot and killed when gunmen invaded his home, has been found not guilty of the crime.

Carter of Diamond, EBD was accused of murdering 30-year-old Ramanah between December 13, 2017, and January 13, 2018, at Kaneville EBD during the course/furtherance of a robbery.

Carter was on trial for the offence before Justice Jo Ann Barlow and a 12-member jury at the High Court in Demerara. He was represented by Attorney-at-Law Konyo Sandiford-Holder while State Counsel Latifah Elliott appeared for the prosecution.

Carter’s trial concluded on Wednesday afternoon.

According to reports, Ramanah, called ‘Jack,’ of 624 Macaw Drive, Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, was shot to his abdomen on December 13, 2017, when bandits invaded his home. The bandits reportedly escaped with a gold chain worth $40,000.

Ramanah was rushed to the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital and was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he underwent surgery but later died on January 13 of the following year.

Following a Preliminary Inquiry (PI), a city magistrate had found that there was sufficient evidence against Carter to put him on trial for the capital offence, and as such, committed him to stand trial at the Demerara Criminal Assizes.
