British Airways to commence Guyana- London flights next year

British Airways –the flag carrier airline of the United Kingdom –will commence flights between London and the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) in 2023. This was revealed during a press conference on Wednesday at the Ministry of Public Works, Wights Lane, Kingston, Georgetown location.

Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill welcomed the new carrier noting that its operations in Guyana will boost tourism. “With the arrival of British Airways, the Ministry of Public Works is very proud to announce that we will be proud to add another 1,328 seats per week…that is what this announcement means today, adding to the 6,000+ seats to Guyana,” he said.

The airline will operate flights from London to Guyana with one stop in St Lucia, therefore opening new opportunities for tourism and trade between Guyana and Eastern Caribbean Islands.

According to British High Commissioner to Guyana Jane Miller, the airline’s entrance into the local market “reflects a growing confidence in Guyana globally, both in tourism and as an economic hub for Latin America and the Caribbean.”

Guyana already accounts for 20% of the UK’s trade with the Caribbean.

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Oneidge Walrond highlighted that many of the upgrades undertaken at the CJIA directly resulted from British Airways requirements to travel to Guyana.

She pointed out that the airline’s entrance into the local market will attract others.

Flights will be scheduled twice weekly from March 2023 using a 777 Boeing aircraft.

Tickets however go on sale from Wednesday, August 10, 2022.
