Minister Teixeira encourages residents to look at sustainable farming methods

As communities continue to suffer major losses in crops during the rainy season, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance, Gail Teixeira is urging farmers to utilize sustainable farming methods.

Speaking to residents in Bartica, Region Seven during the Government’s ongoing consultation on the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030, Teixeira informed the residents about the technique of “raised beds” for planting, which is used in other countries. She explained that in this technique, the beds for planting are off the ground, so if there is a flood, the crops would not be destroyed. She also encouraged residents to take precautions when it comes to agriculture, and to become equipped with other knowledge and skills that will help them to farm in an efficient and effective manner.

The Minister noted that Climate Change is an ongoing problem and there must be preparations for unpredictable weather conditions. “Climate activities and incidents and weather patterns must be a part of the responsibility of every community and the government,” she said.

She further encouraged those present to take steps to secure their buildings, crops and their livestock during the May-June rainy period. “I am asking when you go back to your community to look at where you’re vulnerable and try to make sure you take precautions, most of all to save people’s lives,” she pleaded.

The Government through its LCDS is working with communities to better address issues of climate change and development.
