The two women who are accused of trafficking $5.6M worth in cocaine that was found concealed in mats at the Eugene F. Correia International Airport, Ogle, East Coast Demerara (ECD), were on Tuesday charged and remanded to prison.

Malika Scott, 32, of Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD), appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

She pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on March 5, 2022, at the above-named airport, she had 5.274 kilogrammes of cocaine in her possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Scott, who is being represented by Attorney-at-Law Dexter Todd, was remanded to prison until April 5, 2022, when her case will be called for disclosure.

Meanwhile, 22-year-old Akata Makeba Garnett of ‘C’ Field Sophia Squatting Area, Greater Georgetown, who was arrested along with Scott, appeared before Magistrate Rushelle Liverpool at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Courts.

She too pleaded not guilty to a similar charge. She was remanded until March 31.

On the day in question, Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) ranks performing duties at the airport intercepted Garnett, who was an outgoing passenger, destined for Barbados.

Five mats laced with cocaine were found in her luggage. As such, she was arrested and escorted to CANU’s Headquarters. Further investigations led to the arrest of Scott.
