A man who was sentenced in 2018 to 36 months in jail for breaking into a building and stealing almost $1 million beverages, was on Wednesday slapped with a similar charge.

37-year-old Dwayne Allen, a former guard at the Guyana Public Services Union (GPSU) headquarters in Georgetown was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment after admitting to stealing alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages that were stored in a refrigerator.

He appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Allen pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that between June 4 and June 5, 2021, at Chappel Street, Lodge, Georgetown, he stole a quantity of non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages valued at $135,460,00 and a tent valued at $40,000, property of Abiola Roberts.

Facts presented by the court prosecutor stated that the woman sells non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages at Cuffy Square in an old refrigerator under a tent.  The court heard the woman would secure a refrigerator and tent under a tree.

On June 4, last about 19:30 hrs, the woman secured the articles and went home.  However, the following day, around 07:00 hrs she was walking going to collect refrigerator when a man stopped her and told her that two men were seen pushing it down Hadfield Street.

The woman then went to the area where she had secured her property and discovered that the beverages were missing. Based on information, she went to the car park in the vicinity of Demico where she met a driver who told her that he was hired by two men to transport a refrigerator.

The court prosecutor told the court that when Allen was cautioned, he said, “Yes officer is me and another man went and thief she fridge.”

The Magistrate after listening to the facts sentenced Allen to six months behind bars. In doing so, she noted the fact that he was previously charged and convicted for a similar offence.

In August of 2018, Allen was sentenced to 36 months’ imprisonment on a count of break and enter and larceny.  This was after he entered a guilty plea.

The charge stated that between July 27, 2018, and July 30, 2018, at Lot 160 Regent Road and Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Bourda,  Georgetown, he broke into the GPSU building and stole two Sony televisions valued at $545, 060, a quantity of beverages valued at $368,140, eight packs of cigarettes valued at $3000, one gas cylinder valued $9,000, $35,460,000 in cash and other items worth $20,000.

According to reports, the items were secured in the building. However, when Allen who worked there reported for duty, he removed the articles. An investigation was later conducted and CCTV footage showed him carrying away the items.
