Guyanese Journalist elected President of Caribbean Media workers’ Assoc.

Guyana Press Association Nazima Raghubir who is now elected president of the Association of Caribbean Media Workers

Guyanese Journalist and President of the Guyana Press Association (GPA), Nazima Raghubir was on Saturday elected to serve as President of the Association of Caribbean Media Workers (ACM) during the regional body’s 10th Biennial General Assembly hosted virtually. She would be the second Guyanese to head the ACM following Mr. Clive Bacchus who resides in St Kitts.

In an invited comment by BIG Smith News Watch, Raghubir noted that the new Executive Committee will be continuing the advocacy for press freedom, free access to information and ensure officials are readily accessible in times of the pandemic among other areas.

She pointed out that the Access to Information and the Cyber Crime Laws have affected the work of journalists across the region. As a result, “we will be spending some more time trying to work with our colleagues, train them, trying to get some of these issues addressed,” the new President said.

Also elected from Guyana is owner of Demerara Waves/News Talk Radio Denis Chabrol to serve as Assistant General Secretary.

Others to serve on the Committee for the period 2021-2023 are Emmanuel Joseph as 1st Vice President (Finance), Wesley Gibbings of Trinidad as 2nd Vice President, Harvey Panka as General Secretary and Myriam Malmin and Kenton Chance as Floor Members.
