In a murder case involving the deaths of four fishermen, Justice Sandil Kissoon of the High Court in Berbice imposed the death sentence on five confessed killers.

The four fishermen were murdered between May 27 and 28, 2016, during a piracy attack on the Corentyne Coast.

According to court documents, the deceased: 43-year-old Dhanpaul Ramphal, also known as “Sunil,”; Munish Churman, 26, also known as “Boyo,”; Dochan Sukra, 61, called “Butcher”; and 45-year-old Hemchand Sookdeo, also known as “Dread”, a father of four.

Last month, Leon Sammy, 31, of Number 75 Village, Ganesh Naidoo of Number 79 Village, Ramesh Singh of Liverpool Village, Ramchan Latchman, and Stephon Leacock of Number 77 Village, Corentyne, entered guilty pleas to four murder charges relating to the deaths of the quartet.

Three of the five confessed killers.

On the night of May 27, 2016, the fishermen were out at sea when another boat approached and five men, armed with pieces of wood and cutlasses, boarded their vessel.

The lone survivor, Seepersaud Persaud, was the boat’s captain.

According to the Police, the armed men boarded the boat and they took away two 48-horsepower outboard motor engines, tied up the crew members and threw Persaud overboard.

After drifting for a while, the crew of another nearby fishing vessel came to Persaud’s aid.

Persaud was able to get in touch with people at the Number 66 Fishing Complex while at sea, telling them about the attack and providing a description of the boat the attackers used.

The cops noticed a boat that fit the description when they visited the Number 65 Village shoreline in Corentyne the next day, May 28, 2016. The five men on board were arrested.
