June 27 2026
Hemat Kumar Mohamed, the Uitvlugt man who had reportedly confessed to the killing of his wife, was found hanging in his cell on Saturday, June 27.
Police sources said the 44-year-old was discovered at the Leonora Police Station lockups with a vest tied around his neck, just one day after allegedly admitting to the murder of his 46-year-old wife, Shavannie Hanoman.
A family member further stated that the vest was reportedly tied to the cell door.
Hanoman’s body was discovered on Thursday in a trench a short distance from the couple’s De Groot Enkline, Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara home, a day after she was reported missing on June 24.
A post-mortem examination reportedly revealed that she suffered blunt force trauma to the head and stab wounds to the back.
A relative of the deceased woman said the incident stemmed from an argument.
Investigations are ongoing.
