UG student in deadly De Willem accident released on $300,000 bail
Tyree Li-A-Ping, the 21-year-old University of Guyana student who lost control of the car he was driving and crashed into a fence, killing a man who was standing in his yard, has been released on $300,000 bail. Ping, was on Tuesday, charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
He was arraigned before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on July 24, 2021, at De Willem, Public Road, West Coast Demerara (WCD), he drove motorcar PZZ 9052 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of 54-year-old Kenneth Smith of Ocean View Uitvlugt, WCD.
The matter was adjourned until August 11, 2021.
On the day in question, motor pickup GPP 8150 driven by 39-year-old Sahadeo Singh of Hydronie, East Bank Essequibo was driving along the De Willem Public Road in a line of traffic when the driver alleged that he indicated that he was making a turn into Harry Kissoon Street.
While he was doing so, Li-A-Ping lost control of his vehicle and collided with the motor pickup before crashing into a fence and eventually colliding with the two men who were standing in a yard. Both men were picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where Smith succumbed while receiving treatment.
The UG student of Public Road, Hague, WCD was arrested. A breathalyzer test was conducted on both drivers but there were no traces of alcohol in their systems.
