Two plead guilty in stabbing death of Leonora labourer

Two men on Wednesday pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the 2017 stabbing death of 38-year-old Kawal Shivnauth, of Wine Bush, Leonora West Coast Demerara (WCD).
The duo: Roopnarine Persaud, 23, called ‘Helicopter’ and Deonarine Lakan, 28, called ‘Pascal’ were initially charged with the capital offence of murder back in 2017.

However, they both pleaded guilty to the lesser count following their arraignment before Demerara High Court Judge Sandil Kissoon. The men’s sentencing hearing is set for September 8.
Reports state that Shivnauth was about to exit a shop at Edinburgh when the men ran towards him. Lakhan lashed him to the head while Persaud stabbed him six times to the chest.
According to reports, Shivnauth, a sugar estate worker, was killed a few days after he reportedly approached his stepson, Roopnarine Persaud, warning him about harassing his minor daughter.
