Two men are in custody after a quantity of suspected cannabis was discovered during a police operation at Seventh Avenue, Bartica, on Thursday afternoon.

According to police, the discovery was made between 2:40 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. while officers were conducting a mobile patrol in the area. During the exercise, ranks approached a wooden passenger speedboat that was docked along the shoreline at Seventh Avenue and carried out searches of its occupants.

A search of a 33-year-old fisherman from North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, reportedly uncovered a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis concealed inside a blue chips container.

Officers also searched a 35-year-old miner from Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara, and allegedly found another quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis in his possession.

The men were arrested and taken to the Bartica Police Station along with the suspected narcotics.

The substances were weighed in the presence of the suspects and amounted to 46 grams and 24 grams respectively, for a total of 70 grams.

The two remain in custody as investigations continue and charges are being prepared.
