60-year-old Unique Sunshine London, who had been on trial for the offence of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking, was found guilty on Friday and sentenced to four years’ imprisonment along with a fine of GY$16,782, 000.

London, of Haslington, East Coast Demerara (ECD), trafficked 11.188 kilograms of cocaine on September 14, 2022, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).

She had initially pleaded not guilty to the charge when she appeared before Senior Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrates’ Courts.

On the day in question, Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) ranks stationed at the airport intercepted London, an outgoing passenger destined for the United States of America (USA), with a large quantity of cocaine concealed in biscuit wrappers in her carry-on luggage.

As such, she was arrested and escorted to CANU Headquarters. According to CANU, the drug has a street value of GY$12.3M and would have been worth US$336,000, if it had landed in the USA.
