A man who is no stranger to the courts was on Monday charged for attempting to kill a man over a $3000 debt. 21-year-old Joshua Perreira of Charlestown, Georgetown appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Perreira was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on August 2, 2021, at Cross Street,  Georgetown, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Anthony Rampaul with intent to murder him. Perreira was disruptive throughout the court hearing.

On several occasions, the Magistrate had to demand that he wear his face mask. The man even turned his back on the Magistrate. “You have to listen to me,” the Magistrate told him in a stern tone.

When the Police ranks in court tried to discipline him, Perreira told them, “Soldier man come out my business and don’t touch me.”

Facts presented by the Police prosecutor stated that the defendant and virtual complainant are known to each other. The court heard on the day in question, Perreira confronted Rampaul and asked him about the $3000 which he owed to him. The two then began to argue and Perreira pulled out a knife and dealt Rampaul several stabs about his body before making good his escape.

The injured man was then rush to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he remains a patient. The matter was then reported to the police and Perreira was arrested and charged. The prosecutor objected to bail being granted to Perreira because the victim is still hospitalized.

The Magistrate remanded Perreira to prison until August 25, 2021.
