August 12 2025
Police have arrested 53-year-old Martin True of Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, in connection with the murder of his ex-wife, 45-year-old Bibi Shazida Hanif, whose body was discovered early Tuesday morning at her Samaroo Dam residence.
Reports indicate that at approximately 8:30 hrs on Tuesday, police ranks, acting on information received, intercepted motor car PZZ 3660 along No. 66 Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice. The vehicle was driven by Abdul Jameer True, 29, of Parika, East Bank Essequibo, with the suspect seated in the back. True was informed of the allegation, cautioned, and taken into custody at the Springlands Police Station. He will be transferred to Regional Police Division #3 for further investigation.
Hanif, a cleaner employed with Rapid Oil Field at Halliburton, Garden of Eden, East Bank Essequibo, was reportedly killed between 4:44 hrs and 5:25 hrs on Tuesday. She lived alone at the time of her death, as her 18-year-old son was visiting his father in Berbice.
According to statements given to police, Hanif had been in a relationship with a co-worker, 44-year-old Hayden Xavier, since March, after separating from True. About two weeks ago, she moved back to her home at Samaroo Dam, though she continued to visit Xavier.
According to a police report, on the morning of the incident, Hanif reportedly called Xavier at 4:44 hrs to request a pickup for work. Twenty minutes later, while Xavier was on the Demerara Harbour Bridge, he called her back and claimed that True answered the phone, allegedly stating, “I now fix she deh.” Xavier immediately reported the matter to the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station before proceeding to the woman’s home.
Police who responded found Hanif lying motionless in a pool of blood on the floor beside her bed, with two visible stab wounds to her back. She was pronounced dead on arrival at the West Demerara Regional Hospital. Her body is at Ezekiel Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Investigations are ongoing.
