Motorcyclist killed by drunk truck driver

April 13, 2026

31-Year-Old Haresh Gopilall of 25 D Williams Village, Corentyne Berbice died after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a lorry driven by intoxicated 27-year-old Alexei Anthony De Lima of 23 Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara. The accident occurred on Sunday night, just after 21:00 hrs. along Williamsburg Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice.

Gopilall and his friend Yedesh Singh were traveling on motorcycle CR 1603 while De Lima was driving motor lorry GVV 5043, owned by China Harbor Engineer Company. While Gopilall sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot of the crash, Singh was taken for medical attention and is now being treated for a broken jaw and left shoulder.

Police said the lorry and motorcycle were traveling in opposite directions when the lorry made a sudden turn into the motorcycle’s path, resulting in the collision.

Both rider and pillion were flung from the motorcycle, and Gopilall’s brain matter splattered while Singh was knocked unconscious as their bodies landed on the road surface.

The lorry and car were then taken to Rose Hall Town Police Station as the investigations into the crash continued.

At the police station, the driver of the lorry had a breathalyzer test conducted on him, and he was found to be above the legal limit for alcohol consumption. He remains in police custody.
