Couple and Dog Perish in Essequibo Housefire

February 9, 2025 – A tragic early morning fire at Lot 1A Hydronie East Bank Essequibo, claimed the lives of a husband and wife and their pet dog, leaving investigators searching for answers.
The victims have been identified as Haywattie Bahadur, a 52-year-old teacher, and Hansraj Narine, a 57-year-old bus driver.
Authorities say the fire, which broke out around 1:45 AM, swiftly engulfed the couple’s flat concrete home, completely destroying the structure.
A statement from the Guyana Police Force indicated that a police team from Regional Division #3 arrived at the scene shortly after 2:00 AM in response to a 911 call from an unknown caller.
Upon arrival, officers found the house engulfed in flames and immediately summoned the Leonora Fire Station for assistance.
Sub-Officer Fraser and a team of four firefighters responded with Fire Tenders, working to extinguish the blaze. Unfortunately, by the time they managed to put out the fire, the house had been reduced to ashes.
Authorities later discovered the bodies of the deceased in the northern section of the house, all of whom perished in the fire.
The remains were subsequently removed by undertakers and transported to the Ezekiel Funeral Home.
At this time, the cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing.
