Government to Tighten Regulations on Community Gambling — VP Jagdeo

October 16 2025
Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo stated that the rapid expansion of gambling—particularly through online platforms has become a major social problem.
As a result of this, the government will soon implement stricter regulations to curb the growing social and economic problems linked to gambling, especially at the community level.
This announcement was made at a press conference today at Freedom House.
Jagdeo said the rapid expansion of gambling—particularly through online platforms—has taken a toll on families nationwide.
He noted that Gambling has blossomed and created a series of negative problems in our communities—breaking up families and creating hardship for many single parents.
The VP added that ted that the initial policy framework, which liberalised gambling and introduced supportive tax measures, was designed to help boost hotel and tourism revenues.
However, he said the situation has evolved far beyond its original intent.
The Vice President said the government will move aggressively to regulate gambling activities and ensure that legitimate operations are properly taxed.
He stressed the importance of addressing the financial impact on households. “If people are selling out or starving their children to gamble, how can we expect them to build homes or secure a future? We have to change this mindset,” Jagdeo emphasised.
Jagdeo further disclosed that President Irfaan Ali has personally met with families affected by gambling-related challenges, while religious organisations have voiced similar concerns.
He posited that the government will not allow this to continue, signalling that new restrictions and enforcement measures on community-level gambling will be introduced in the coming months.
