Guyana issues “strong objection” to Venezuela’s recent claims

Guyana has officially registered its “strong objection” to the Venezuelan Government over that country’s attempt to assume jurisdiction over Guyana’s marine and submarine areas. This strong objection was registered when Hugh Todd, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation met with Moses Chavez, Chargé d’ Affaires, Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela on Monday. Guyana has denounce Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s decree that attempts to give that country jurisdiction over Guyana’s seabed that is aligned with the Essequibo, a section that is being claimed by that country.
In a tweet today, Maduro seem to remain committed to claiming the Essequibo even as Guyana called for her neighbour to commit to the peaceful resolution on the issue with the matter before the International Court of Justice. In his tweet Maduro said Guyana Essequibo “has always been Venezuelan territory and suffered from imperial plundering. That territory belongs to the Venezuelan people and we are going to reconquer it,” the tweet reads.
Meanwhile, today Foreign Affairs Minister Todd in updating the Members of the Parliamentary Sectoral Committee on Foreign Relations provided an update on recent developments concerning the relations between Guyana and Venezuela, a release from the Foreign Affairs Ministry said. The Committee demonstrated unanimity in the strong condemnation of the implementation of any
law by Venezuela with extraterritorial application in contravention of international law and the rights of Guyana the release said. The Committee further reiterated national sentiments for continued vigilance in safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Guyana.
