Government Commits’ to Building New Home for Elderly Couple in Diamond

December 17, 2024 –Following a request from Grove- Diamond Councillor Mr. Simeon Kissoon, an elderly couple of Diamond East Bank Demerara will now receive a new home with assistance from the Government.
The initiative will see the construction of a flat, concrete two-bedroom house for the elderly couple, replacing their current home, which is in dire condition. Their existing structure suffers from severe leaks, and the kitchen is frequently flooded, forcing Ms. Ramkhelawan to wear long boots just to prepare meals.
The Councillor has expressed deep gratitude to Minister of Housing Collin Croal and President Dr. Irfaan Ali for their swift intervention in providing assistance to Ms. Sumintra Ramkhelawan and her husband, Beeramsingh Ramkhelawan, both pensioners living in a dilapidated shack on 11th Street, Diamond, EBD.
Councillor Kissoon highlighted the project’s significance, noting the profound impact it will have on the Ramkhelawan family and the broader Grove-Diamond community.
“As a councillor of Grove-Diamond, I took an oath to ensure that our residents are comfortable and happy,” Kissoon said. “This endeavor embodies the spirit of giving that is central to the Christmas season, and I am thrilled to witness its fruition.”
The councillor revisited the home with a contractor to finalize plans for the new residence, which is expected to provide the Ramkhelawans with a safe and comfortable living environment.
Kissoon commended the government’s commitment to community welfare and praised the collaboration with the Ministry of Housing as a testament to their dedication to improving the lives of vulnerable citizens.
“This project not only restores dignity to Ms. Ramkhelawan and her husband but also reflects our collective effort to uplift those in need and improve living conditions in Grove-Diamond,” he added.
The initiative is part of the government’s broader focus on addressing housing needs and enhancing the well-being of all Guyanese, particularly the elderly and vulnerable populations.
