GOG not involved in selection/design of Guyana Olympic team outfit

The uniforms of Guyana’s Olympians at the opening of the 32nd Olympiad in Japan are attracting criticism from a number of Guyanese on social media.

The absence of colors that represent the country’s flag is among the main criticisms . The uniform are all red and black with black, white and yellow stripes.

“Not going to get into to the black or green bull%$%#, the designer and whatever committee approved this should get their eyes checked 😬 what a disappointment but this looks like team Trinidad wearing Guyana flags one of the worse team costumes if I ever seen one 🤦🏾‍♂️ 🤦🏾‍♂️ most of all I feel really sorry for these young athletes who now will be the center of this black or green shit storm,” one person said on social media.

Sport Journalist Rawle Toney who weighed in on the issue on social media pointed out that the government is not responsible for uniforms but it is the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA).

“Is it hard to just wish these athletes well and focus on them and NOT what they’re wearing? There’s absolutely nothing wrong with having an opinion, but be factual and at least let those athletes know or feel that they have YOUR support,” Toney said.

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport on its Facebook page distanced itself from the selection and design of the uniforms.
