In what turned out to be fiery contest, supporters of either side were not disappointed as both Guyana Defense Force (GDF) and the Fruta Conquerors female teams played fantastic football at the Women’s Development League (WDL).

But it was the girls from the army who walked out victorious before a packed audience at the Eve Leary Ground.

On paper this game was expected to be a one-sided one, whereas the GDF was expected to assert their will, but a resurgent Fruta Conquerors led by Captain Jessica Teasdale and Shamya Daniels kept the Military outfit at bay for major parts of the first half.

The headlines would then change when speed and flamboyancy met with Abioce Heywood who broke the deadlock in the first half with a fine finish.

The game was not short of drama either as Fruta Conquerors earned themselves a penalty, which saw Teasdale stepping up to make it 1-1 going into the half time break.

The start of the second half saw the Fruta ladies coming out swinging for the fences, but they lacked the creativity and finishing which proved to be key.

Young Sandra Johnson, who could have almost been player of the match, made some very penetrative passes but the GDF ladies were very disciplined in the way they defended.

Cleotta Dublin had the Eve Leary ground in a frenzy after she put the Soldiers up 2-1 after a fine run and finish.

That goal then downed the spirit of the girls from Tucville who made mistakes and further inflicted more pain on themselves when Heywood made it 3-1 after a fine header from a corner and scoring her second for the game.

The GDF women came out victorious, but the game in itself is one that lived up to its billing and had supporters craving more football of this eminence.
