Former People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) Leader and Opposition Leader Robert Herman Orlando Corbin, CCH, has died at the age of 78.

Reports indicate that Mr. Corbin passed away at a city hospital, where he was receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit.

His death was confirmed by PNCR officials.

The PNCR and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), in a statement, described Corbin as a long-serving member whose contributions to the party and Guyana spanned several decades.

Mr Corbin served as Leader of the PNCR from 2003 to 2012, having risen to the position following the death of former President and party leader Desmond Hoyte. He also served for several years as party chairman and was elected leader on multiple occasions.

He represented the PNCR in the National Assembly as a Member of Parliament from August 1973 to October 1997 and again from 2001 to 2011. He also served as Leader of the Opposition.

During the PNC’s period in government, Corbin held several ministerial portfolios and served as Deputy Prime Minister from 1985 to 1992.

In 2000, he was elected PNC Chairman. Following Hoyte’s death, he became Acting Leader before subsequently being elected to the substantive position.

Corbin led the PNCR into the 2006 General and Regional Elections, after which he eventually stepped down as party leader in 2012.

Beyond politics, Corbin was an Attorney-at-Law and maintained a professional career while remaining active in the PNCR.

The party credited him with being a strong advocate for coalition politics, saying his efforts contributed to the PNCR’s eventual participation in the APNU+AFC coalition, which won the 2015 General and Regional Elections.

The PNCR and APNU also described Corbin as astute, loyal, disciplined and hardworking, noting that he continued to provide advice to the party during his illness.

“Comrade Corbin’s death is an irreplaceable loss to the PNCR and he will surely be missed”

They extended condolences to his family and said his contributions to the party and Guyana would leave a lasting legacy.
