Guyana has issued a protest note to Venezuela after two Venezuelan Sukhoi SU 30 fighter jets, flew over the community of Eteringbang in Region Seven on Tuesday.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Hugh Todd handed this note to  Venezuelan Ambassador to Guyana Luis Edgardo Diaz Monclus on Wednesday.

The protest note registers the government’s condemnation of the “recent violation” of Guyana’s sovereignty, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Ambassador Monclus reportedly told Minister Todd he is only aware of a reconnaissance mission within Venezuelan territory to monitor narco-trafficking and illegal activities.

The statement said that Ambassador Monclus related that Venezuela was committed to peaceful relations with Guyana as he committed to transmitting the information from the Foreign Minister to his Venezuelan government.

The statement said that Minister Todd informed the Ambassador that on Tuesday the two jets flew at a very low altitude, circled the location before proceeding in an easterly direction.

The Ministry said that Minister Todd voiced the government’s concerns on this “act of aggression”  which he said is a “clear violation of Guyana’s territorial space as well as International law and convention.”

Minister Todd reiterated President Irfaan Ali’s commitment to engaging with Venezuela in areas of mutual interest for the betterment and prosperity of the people of Guyana and Venezuela the Ministry said.
