Fire detectors, extinguishers and sprinkles needed in buildings – Home Affairs Ministry

The Home Affairs Ministry is calling on the public to install smoke detectors and fire extinguishers in buildings more than two stories high. This call came following the fiery destruction of the popular Sharon’s Mall on King and Charlotte Streets in downtown Georgetown. 

The Ministry in its statement said that it is reminding the public of the need for “the installation of smoke detectors, fire alarms, extinguishers and other fire appliances.”

“For buildings over two (2) stories high, the Ministry again wishes to advise of the need for Riser Mains with hoses and Fire Sprinkler Systems to be installed,” the statement read, “building inspections for electrical and fire safety compliance are mandatory for such buildings and must be diligently pursued.”

Last night’s fire brought into question whether or not the building code is being followed, whether regular inspections are being done by several agencies and departments and called into the question the fire fighting methods as well as access to water for fire fighting.

The Ministry in its statement suggested that the fire maybe electrical in origin but said it will rely on results from the ongoing investigations.
