Duo Convicted in Brutal 2020 Murder of Sophia Man

November 9 2024 – Twenty-one-year-old Kaprese Nobrega and Shay Carter, 29, were convicted on Thursday for the 2020 murder of Kevin Campbell, following a unanimous jury verdict.
The tragic incident began on March 21, 2020, with a confrontation at 25-year-old Campbell’s home in ‘B’ Sophia, Greater Georgetown.
A dispute between Nobrega and Brandon Smith, Campbell’s brother, escalated when Nobrega initially stabbed Smith twice at his residence. Later that evening, Nobrega returned with a group, including Carter, looking for Smith but instead encountered Campbell.

Witnesses reported that Carter dragged Campbell from his home, and Nobrega, aided by others, launched a brutal attack, stabbing him multiple times in the chest, face, and leg.
Neighbours rushed to aid Campbell and transported him to Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, but despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries a week later.
Key evidence in the trial included the testimony of two of Campbell’s relatives who witnessed the attack, along with Nobrega’s own confession to the police.
The prosecution was led by attorneys Muntaz Ali and Christopher Belfield.
Represented by defence attorney Ronald Bostwick, both Nobrega and Carter, who were residents of Sophia at the time, were found guilty of the capital offence.
Justice Navindra Singh presided over the trial, and sentencing is scheduled for December 2, 2024, pending a probation report and victim impact statements.
