Cyclist Crushed in Hit-and-Run at Ruimzeight

September 8 2025
The quiet of a Sunday night on the West Coast Demerara was shattered when 41-year-old labourer Mohamed Shazaud Wahab was struck down and left to die in a horrific hit-and-run accident on the Ruimzeight Public Road.
According to a police report, Wahab was cycling alongside his brother Ahmad around 9:15 p.m. when a speeding white minibus, travelling east along the northern carriageway, slammed into him with devastating force. The impact threw Wahab violently onto the asphalt, his broken body sprawled across the roadway as his mangled bicycle lay twisted beside him.
Ahmad, who was riding just a few feet away, watched in horror as the bus sped away into the night, leaving his brother bleeding and motionless on the road. Witnesses described the sound of the collision as “sickening,” followed by the desperate cries of Ahmad as he rushed to his brother’s side.
Emergency Medical Technicians arrived minutes later, but the injuries were too severe. Wahab was picked up in an unconscious state, his body battered from the collision, and rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital. Doctors could only pronounce him dead on arrival.
