Cops seek new attempted murder charge for victim’s ex-boyfriend

Police are seeking legal counsel to determine if new charges can be filed against Sasenarne Sankar, also known as ‘Wire,’ who was previously accused of attempted murder.

This development follows the decision of Sankar’s ex-girlfriend, Sandy Persaud, to decline testifying against him in court. Persaud, who is also known as ‘Baby,’ reportedly accepted financial compensation, leading to the case being discharged on May 29, 2024.

Persaud had accused Sankar of attacking her with a cutlass on April 5, 2023, at her mother’s house, causing severe injuries to her head, back, legs, and fingers. This incident allegedly occurred on the same day she was scheduled to obtain a restraining order against him. Sankar also allegedly assaulted Persaud’s mother before fleeing the scene.

Persaud underwent emergency surgery and was hospitalized for several weeks. She expressed frustration with Region Six police for their delay in apprehending Sankar, claiming he continued to threaten her and her family. Persaud also alleged a history of physical abuse by Sankar during their relationship, including an incident where he posted explicit images of her on social media and made threats to a woman who had sheltered her.

The suspect was eventually captured on May 9, 2024, at Moleson Creek, Corentyne, near the Suriname/Guyana ferry crossing. He was charged with attempted murder and appeared virtually in the No. 75 Village Magistrates’ Court on May 29, 2024. However, Persaud’s decision to withdraw her complaint resulted in the discharge of the case.

Police are now reviewing the situation to see if there is a basis for new charges against Sankar.
