Cooper admitted to the Bar- Eyes professional development of GPF

A senior superintendent has the professional growth of the Guyana Police Force in his sights. Snr Superintendent Edmond Cooper was admitted to the bar on Tuesday morning before Chief Justice (ag) Roxane George. Upon his admission, Cooper told the media he hopes to use his knowledge to add to the professionalism of the Force, “What I plan to do is see how better I could have the force move from strength to strength, the police have to up their game in relation to the law,” he lamented.
The officer wants to aid his junior colleagues in equipping themselves with knowledge of the law also as he said such knowledge can “make a meaningful contribution to law and its development”. Cooper does not plan to limit himself to the Force as he said he is opened to passing his knowledge to members of the public whether as an accuse or victim if called upon.
Cooper who started this journey in 2009 described it as a difficult one but credited, “resilience, courage and help from God,” for achieving his Legal Education Certificate which led to his admission.
He is currently pursing a doctorate in counter terrorism. The Senior Superintendent is currently attached to the Projects Department of the Guyana Police Force. He had previously served a Commander of several divisions with Region Five being the last.
The Guyana Police Force in its congratulatory message today said that Cooper came from “humble beginnings” in the village of Nurney, East Berbice on the Corentyne. He joined the Guyana Police Force on September 14, 1992 as an apprentice and was subsequently sworn as a Police Constable in 1993. Cooper started his career as a General Duty rank at the Springlands Police Station. The release said that after his first posting, Mr. Cooper subsequently continued his career as a Police Prosecutor for fourteen (14) years and then went on to hold several appointments within the Force during his tenure.
Mr. Cooper is the holder a Bachelors of Law from the University of Guyana, an International Diploma in Leadership Studies from the American University of Peace Studies, a Diploma in Private Investigation from Penn Foster College, USA among other certificates.
