Akeem Wong, a convicted rapist serving a 15-year sentence, has managed to escape from the Mazaruni Correctional Facility earlier today.

According to a statement from the Guyana Prison Service, the escape occurred at approximately 07:20hrs while Wong, accompanied by inmate Gilbert Gill, was working in the wooded area under the supervision of Prison Officer Torres.

During the work, Wong requested permission from Officer Torres to relieve himself, which was granted. However, when Officer Torres went to check on Wong after about five minutes, he discovered that Wong was missing. Consequently, an alarm was raised, prompting law enforcement officials to expand the search perimeter around the vicinity.

Further details will be provided as the situation develops.
