Gov't bills businessman GYD $800,000 for destroying security feature on public road

The dismantled security feature next door to the business place

On Thursday afternoon a man was observed by this publication using a sledgehammer to break a section of the newly constructed East Coast Demerara Highway in the vicinity of Non-Pariel.

The security feature similar to this is what the businessman ordered dismantle

The part of the road he was breaking was actually a security feature that was placed into the design of the road construction to separate pedestrians and pedal cyclists from the moving traffic. Further to that, the feature also serves as a buffer to prevent motorists from easily running off the road.

When approached by this publication and questioned about his destruction of the public infrastructure, the man said he was instructed to do so by his boss, the owner of the Best Buy Variety Store. He further stated that his boss informed him that permission was sought and gotten from the Buxton-Foulis Neighbourhood Democratic Council for the destruction.

The Best Buy Variety Store

This publication then contacted the owner of the Best Buy Variety Store to enquire who exactly from the NDC gave permission to break the security feature from the public road but he could not answer, except to say that he was breaking off the excess concrete.

“I did not know it was that serious sir, but I was just asking him to break off the excess concrete from the road so that cars could come down off the road,” said the businessman to BIG Smith News Watch.

It should be noted that during the construction of the road, the security feature skipped entrances to private residences and business premises to allow vehicle access. Where the workman was breaking on Thursday was neither in front of the businessman’s property but rather the property of another private residence.

BIG Smith News Watch checked with both the Ministry of Public Infrastructure and the Neighborhood Democratic Council and both denied ever giving the businessman and or anyone associated with him, any permission to break the security feature from the roadway.
