Block ‘8’ residents raise alarm over road obstruction

Residents of Second Street, Block ‘8’, Mon Repos, are voicing growing concerns over what they describe as a persistent and unreasonable obstruction of a community roadway by a private individual involved in new construction.

According to residents, large quantities of sand and other construction materials have been dumped on the roadway for more than a week, causing damage to the road edges and creating serious inconvenience for motorists and pedestrians.

The heap of sand reportedly occupies a significant portion of the street, forcing vehicles—especially larger ones—to the extreme corners of the roadway, increasing the risk of accidents and further deterioration of the road surface.

Residents said there has been no urgency or effort by the property owner to clear the materials.

Despite repeated pleas from neighbours to remove or relocate at least part of the sand, the individual has allegedly refused.

Residents further claimed that the man told them the road belongs to the government and that he does not see anything wrong with his actions.

The situation has escalated tensions in the community, with residents alleging that the individual also stated that neither the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) nor the police could do anything to him.

A representative from the Community Policing Group reportedly approached the individual as well, but that intervention was also rejected.

In what neighbours described as an unreasonable response, the individual has allegedly begun using the sand from the inner portion of the pile, leaving the section blocking the roadway largely untouched and the street still obstructed.

Speaking with BIG Smith News Watch, a resident said the community takes pride in maintaining its neighbourhood, including the roads, and expressed frustration that the obstruction continues unabated.

Residents are now calling on the relevant authorities to intervene, warning that continued inaction could lead to further road damage and ongoing hardship for motorists and residents who depend on the roadway daily.

Despite residents insisting that a report was made to the NDC, BIG Smith News was told by an NDC representative that they were unaware of any such report and are urging residents to make contact.
