A Black Bush Polder Corentyne man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for killing of his 19 year old year brother on March 20, 2017.

24 year old Gopaul Sewsankar recently pleaded guilty before Justice Simone Morris Ramlall to manslaughter committed against his brother 19 year old Vishal Sahora of Lot 85 Yakusari, Black Bush Polder.

Before sentencing the accused, Justice Ramlall says she took into consideration that fact that the accused had been consuming alcohol, the weapon used, the life that was lost and given that the victim was the younger brother of the accused as well as the mitigating factors of the accused.

Justice Ramlall says she believe that 18 years in prison would be a good starting point of which 6 years were deducted for his guilty plea,2 years and 11 months were also deducted for his time spent in prison.

During the high court proceedings, the court heard that on the day in question, Sahora, one of his brothers, Samuel Sewsankar, and a friend of Sahora were imbibing under the friend’s house when the suspect approached Sahora requesting to borrow his motorcycle.

Sahora refused and the brother became annoyed and dealt him a slap during which a scuffle ensued between the two brothers. The accused then whisked out a knife he had on his possession and dealt his brother a stab to the chest. Sahora was rushed to the Mibicuri Hospital where he succumbed while receiving treatment.

Attorney at law Surihya Sabsook who represented the accused told the court in her plea for leniency for her client disclosed that he is a first time offender who is involved in a common law relationship and has a four year old daughter. She said, while his actions are not excused, the incident arose around brothers that were drinking and the accused has expressed remorse of what he did to his brother.

Meanwhile, Sewsankar father asked that the judge have mercy on the accused. The man said that the accused has a four year old daughter which he will now have to take care of. “I beg for mercy for him. That is my son and I beg for him”.
