Bridge set on fire; Person should be treated for mental health issues-Edghill

A deplorable bridge that links the Glasgow New Housing Scheme to the main East Bank Berbice Road.

The bridge was set alight on Saturday night by person(s) who it is believed, might have raised concerns about its state in the past.

Yesterday Sunday, the Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill visited the area where he was accompanied by regional officials.

He described as reckless, the persons who set fire the bridge.

“I think whoever is that person who lit the bridge on fire is someone who seriously should be treated for mental health issues. If because a bridge is broken and it is not repair almost instantaneous your form of protest is to burn the bridge I don’t see how that helps the problem” the Public Works Minister noted.

Edghill who was also accompanied by engineers on his visited, instructed them to assess the situation at the bridge given its condition of the bridge so that steps can be taken to rehabilitate the structure.

The residents were reminded that damaging public infrastructure is a crime.

Besides the bridge that was burnt, the Ministry of Public Works will be doing rehabilitation works on the alternative bridge within the Glasgow New Housing Scheme area. “We will have to fix it (the burnt bridge). It is not something that I enjoy having to do but the fact that communities could be cut off if the bridges are not operable. We have to keep servicing people”
